So you would give striking runes and weapons with them at 3rd level. TL DR Take stuff that lets you roll nice dice, take stuff that lets you roll that dice whenever you want. You could still buff your 'unarmed strike' by taking great weapon master, though. How about abilities that allow you to add "the weapon's damage dice" an additional time? Unarmed strikes are not weapons, even though such abilities typically come into play "when you hit with a melee weapon attack." So, assuming an unarmed strike IS a melee weapon attack, but not a weapon. Rogues are stereotyped as a Dexterity class in both D&D 5e and Pathfinder 2e. Additionally you cannot use an greataxe as 'unarmed strike' and still try to use items that buff 'unarmed strike'. This die changes as you gain monk levels, as shown in the Martial Arts column of the Monk table. You can roll a d4 in place of the normal damage of your unarmed strike or monk weapon. However, I'm curious what people make of the RAW on this as I am as of yet undecided. You can use Dexterity instead of Strength for the attack and damage rolls of your unarmed strikes and monk weapons. Because it does say 'the weapon's damage dice', it only applies on attacks made with weapons - not unarmed strikes. What about abilities that are worded like "when you make a weapon attack.", such as various Cleric Domains' Divine Strike abilities? Isn't "melee weapon attack" just a subset of "weapon attack," so RAW anything that is a melee weapon attack must also be a weapon attack? This particular question seems to me to be the most debatable - there are some abilities that appear to be clearly intended specifically for weapons, Divine Strike specifically says ".infuse your weapon strikes.", yet I don't see anything OP about allowing them for unarmed strikes. When you score a critical hit with a melee weapon attack, you can roll one of the weapon’s damage dice one additional time and add it to the extra damage of the critical hit. ![]() ![]() Is that the correct interpretation of RAW? ![]() Items like the Dragon Hide or the Eldritch Claw tattoo might aid you in dealing additional damage, or giving you new types of Unarmed Attacks. Instead of using a weapon to make a melee weapon attack, you can use an unarmed strike: a punch, kick, head-butt, or similar forceful blow (none of which count as weapons). It reads to me like an unarmed strike is a special case of melee weapon attack in which a non-weapon is used in the attack and would thus qualify for abilities that are used in conjunction with melee weapon attacks. Some magic items may boost your potential to deal damage with unarmed strikes.
