![]() It was a time when teachers were still allowed to smoke on school property. The clip Rewind aired was first on in the mid 70s on the program Concern. Recess Recess might be fun for the kids, but for teachers, it might mean yard duty, or a trip to the staff room. And for the kids of 1981, it was all about snug cords, legwarmers and pointed shoes. The song mentioned, among other things, the snappy clothing you need to make an impression in school. It went all the way to number three on the charts, and also appeared in the Marx Brothers movie Horse Feathers in 1932. It was called Collegiate, and it was performed by Fred Waring and the Pennsylvanians. ![]() If you were going to university in 1925, you might be singing this song, a big hit that year. McAlpine graduated from the University of Toronto in 1908. It was an unusual move for a girl in the early 1900s. After doing brilliantly in high school, she had gone on to study at the University of Toronto. In 1978, on the program Voice of the Pioneer, Bill McNeil talked to Mrs. Going back to school in September always means a change of pace, but for young women who wanted to go to university a hundred or so years ago, there were particular challenges. American educator Zacharie Clements talked about the changing flavours in education theory. But as so often happens with social experiments, where there's change, there's backlash. Rewind talked about free schools versus back to basics in a discussion from 1971 on a CBC Radio program called Bringing Back the Future. Some of these ideas included what were called free schools. By the late 1960s, many educators were looking for new approaches to teaching children. In 1970 the Inuit writer Zebedee Nungak remembered an experience from a residential school he attended in the 1960s. However, school wasn't always such a happy experience for First Nations children. But for their teachers, the work had already begun. ![]() The children in that clip were very excited about school. The hosts are Bill McNeil and Maria Barrett. Rewind starts with a clip from 1959 and the program Assignment. Good news from Rewind! Rewind will now have two airings on Radio One: Thursday at 2:05 pm with a repeat Sunday evening at 8:05 pm. There will also be stories about free schools and the back to basics movement, recess and the latest fashions, middle school cliques and school songs. We listen to the anticipation of a five year old about to set foot in a classroom for the first time, to a teacher who describes the staff room. Rewind goes back to school to celebrate teachers and students, chalkboards and laptops, shiny new pencils and smart phones.

The auditory system is not fully developed until age 15, so many children can improve auditory skills over time before the auditory system fully matures. With appropriate intervention and therapy, children with APD can be successful in school and life by becoming active participants in their own listening, learning and communication. There is no one-size fits all treatment strategy for APD. ![]() Treatment is individualized for the child and may include computer-assistance, one-on-one training with a therapists, or home-based programs. There are a wide variety of treatment activities to help remediate the disorder itself. These skills include language, problem solving, memory, and attention to help aid with cognitive tasks. Higher order skills are recruited to assist and compensate for auditory deficits.Extended time for reading and writing, preferred seating in class, quiet work space, use of pictures and gestures to enhance spoken word, and classroom notes are other examples of environmental changes in school. Environmental modifications may include the use of electronic device (FM system) to reduce background noise and amplify the speaker.Treatment usually focuses on three areas: environmental modifications, developing higher order skills to compensate, and remediation of the auditory deficit. Treatment for APD is individualized towards the child. What is involved in the treatment of APD? Most auditory processing disorder tests require the child to be at least 7 or 8 years old. Auditory processing disorder cannot be diagnosed through a symptom checklist alone, and requires careful and specific diagnostic measures. The problem lies within discriminating sounds, not difficulty hearing the sounds.Ĭhildren with ADHD have difficulty understanding verbal information due to lack of attention not neural processing. There is no hearing loss associated with APD. How is APD different than a hearing impairment? APD impacts receptive and expressive language. The movie also depicts Vivian’s evolution from streetwalker to Beverly Hills socialite through an orgiastic shopping spree during which Gere promises to spend “an obscene amount of money” on her. Thankfully, today we are all more skeptical of those guys,” he told Woman’s Day magazine in Australia in 2012. “It made those guys seem dashing, which was wrong. “Admire Julia and Richard’s beauty, and sing along to Orbison or Roxette, but never forget that it is one of the most misogynist, patriarchal, classist, consumerist, and lookist movies ever to come out of Hollywood.”Īlthough he is dutifully appearing on TV this month to promote “Pretty Woman’s” anniversary, Gere in the past has publicly dismissed the movie for glorifying Wall Street corporate raiders like his ruthless Edward character, who dismantles struggling companies. “‘Pretty Woman’ may be a fantasy but it’s a deeply sexist, consumerist fantasy,” wrote Rachael Johnson last year for Bitch Flicks, a feminist movie site. But she also has no apparent career goals beyond becoming the kept woman of a wealthy businessman. The Vivian character is clearly intelligent, and values love over money. On one hand Roberts’ character, Vivian, is a compelling protagonist who dispels the stereotype of the drug-addicted “crack whore” with little ambition, Hail-Jares said. They do it out of economic necessity after encountering roadblocks to traditional employment such as lack of education, a criminal record or sexual discrimination, she said. Most sex workers that Hail-Jares encounters through street-based outreach are not in it for a lark, or because they lack the drive to succeed, she says. The movie glosses over the less-than-glamorous motivations that can lead women into sex work, says Katie Hail-Jares, a board member of the Sex Workers Outreach Project (SWOP USA). It whitewashes the realities of prostitution Here are some of the leading pro-and-con arguments about the movie. ![]() Some critics complain the Garry Marshall film, whose female lead is an unrefined prostitute rescued from the streets by Richard Gere’s elegant millionaire, degrades women and glorifies materialism. ![]() The movie, which celebrates its 25th anniversary on Monday, grossed $463 million worldwide and made her the biggest female star in Hollywood.īut how does it stand up today? For TV shows, click “Track Series" on the show’s product card to build a lineup of unwatched episodes. The service also lets you follow shows and movies. Once you find something you want to watch, press the play button and it will launch that service with your show pulled up. You can browse by title or genre, or simply scroll through rows of recommended content organized under headings such as “What’s Popular,” “Trending,” and “New.” You can also explore what’s coming soon and what’s leaving soon, to help you prioritize what to watch next. There’s also a section where you can find out where to rent or buy newer movies from pay-per-view services such as Amazon, Apple iTunes, and Vudu. Reelgood will also check TV Everywhere channels you can stream if you subscribe to a traditional pay-TV package. That added a fun extra layer to picking every upgrade as I looked ahead at where the next curse was looming in each tree. There are three randomized skill trees you can work your way up to unlock boons during each run, but the trick here is that you can see ahead of time which points on each tree are “cursed.” The buffs that will be offered get better as you go higher into a given tree, but you’ll inevitably hit one with a curse that will make things harder for you as well – be that making items in the shops you stumble across pricier or increasing the health of certain enemies. Combat admittedly remains a little bit straightforward despite these, but the attacks of different enemies push you to be mobile and get creative with all the tools at your disposal in a way I really enjoyed.Īnother clever twist on the usual roguelike structure is Have a Nice Death’s skill tree system. Some of these are cooldown-based weapon attacks like a heavy hammer or ranged shuriken, while others like a fireblast or a particularly rare one that rains meteors from above instead use a refilling magic meter. ![]() You’ll also find secondary weapons as you progress, which add more options to your moveset and a bit of strategic variation to each run. It’s your bread and butter, and a pair of NPCs you can find in later levels will let you upgrade and modify it in interesting ways – that could just be more damage, or it could evolve your Scythe into options like a slower but longer range version that flings its blade forward on a chain. Your primary scythe swings fast right out of the gate, making it easy to chain together simple, single-button combos with aerial maneuvers and quick dashes. While your moveset isn’t overly complex, it is immensely satisfying to use. ![]() The price of these are even reduced by completing a list of achievement-style tasks like beating a specific boss a certain number of times, which is a nice way to unlock them either through sheer volume of playtime or a more nuanced targeting of goals.Īn action game is only as good as its combat, though, and here Have a Nice Death feels great. Doing so will send you all the way back to the start for a fresh run, though your accomplishments along the way will earn you a persistent currency that you can spend between attempts to unlock more items to stumble upon in further tries. All the while you’ll be killing smaller baddies, getting upgrades, and improving your character while trying not to run out of health. Even without much color, Have a Nice Death uses different shades of gray to impressive effect and its hand-drawn look is seriously top-notch as a result.Īs usual with roguelikes, you explore procedurally assembled pathways in a series of themed levels, each capped off by its own boss to defeat. The world itself is also a treat – largely black and white with some splashes of color as you travel through satirical versions of the afterlife’s paperwork-filled offices. Its character designs are absolutely delightful, from your tiny but expressive grim reaper to the creative baddies you’ll cut down with his scythe. Perhaps most strikingly is its art style. ![]() Lastly, simply launch BlueStacks and begin playing your favorite games on macOS. ![]() Now, go back to the Security & Privacy menu and click on the "Restart" button.ġ2. I am looking for any suggestions that might help me or anyone willing to put in a little time to answer a few questions when I run into problems. I figure this is the best place to start. I have a Raspberry Pi 3 b running Debian Jessie (not lite) with MagicMirror and Mycroft both installed and operating without issues. Both start automatically on boot and operate independently. I did run into an issue with the libfann-dev library explained here with solution: Trying to install both Mycroft-Core and MagicMirror on the same PI Then once you follow all the instructions and have the MagicMirror working, then install the Mycroft-Core Then from the command line or linux terminal window follow installation instructions for MagicMirror For the skill I am proposing to work, a user would need to have a number of things on their Pi.įirst I started with a Raspberry Pi 3 b and a 16gb micro sd card.Īfter using etcher to put the image on the sd card, into the pi and boot. So… I thought I would try to build on an existing MagicMirror module called MMM-voice with the Hello-Lucy modifications to receive commands from a Mycroft skill. The MMM-voice module for MagicMirror is installed and works if I stop Mycroft. ![]() It’s an issue with having one microphone. (Error) audio open error: Device or resource busy. Essentially two applications can’t share the microphone without coming up with a solution to that (possibly using dsnoop). But my thinking is just to have Mycroft use the microphone and build a skill that passes commands to the MMM-voice module (java). I believe building the Mycroft Skill to do that will be rather straight forward using commands like the Hello-Lucy modifications. What would be the best way to have Mycroft send the command “HIDE_CLOCK” to the MMM-voice module to be processed? socketmessage? or to reuse the code written by fewieden and bring that into the Mycroft environment? Will I need to build an intent for each command? or would there be a way to use an array? (putting all of the Module names in the modules.voc file)Īs far as Dialog, Mycroft could respond "Hiding Clock" Whatever advice the community is willing to provide would be extremely helpful. Thanks! That is awesome! Makes sense to me. I just need to wrap my head around what each of the pieces of code do. My pan is to use Mycroft for the voive recognition portion given the microphone resource busy problem. The MMM-voice module has all the code to control the MagicMirror display properties so I see no reason to re-invent the wheel there. My thought is to have the MMM-voice module listening to a port instead of the microphone, and just send the commands to the port from mycroft. The MMM-voice module uses pocketsphinx for the voice recogniton and wake word detection is no where near as good as Mycroft. So my idea is to use fewieden’s code and modify it to listen to a port for the commands and bypass the pocketsphinx portion of this code. The Hello-Lucy is just modifications to fewieden’s code to allow for individual module controls and pages of modules. There’s even a free PDF of it as well. Will I need to create a number sample*.intent.json files to match the number of commands for the modules? Or will I just need a few? So here’s a question that will show how much I need to learn. Alternatively you can grab an issue online or get it digitally via our app on Android and iOS.
